On a four day backpack trip through Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, a small group from a nearby island made our way from the top of the cliff in the distance and followed cairns of lava stones marking the Hilina Pali Trail. Though we hiked through the desert by day we camped at coastal parks with awesome snorkeling.

Stretching 20 kilometers (12 miles) through the Ka'u Desert, the cliff know as Hilina Pali, a fault scarp, rises 450 meters (1500 feet) above the wind-swept desert floor, helping create an atmosphere beautiful to behold, if daunting to cross.
