I became enamored of the atmosphere—cool, slightly humid and saturated with the aroma of wine and oak—in wine caves several years ago when I spent the summer shooting several panoramas to illustrate an article Wine Caves and Champagne Cellars in the Northern California Wine Country.
An invitation from Daryl Sattui, California Vintner and owner of the castle, led to the discovery of the huge barrel room—one of many barrel storage areas—on the lowest floor of the castle. Castello di Amorosa is a crenellated stone fortress with draw bridge, guard towers, a Knight's room and grand hall adorned with frescos, numerous tunnels, passageways and wine tasting rooms. Just outside Calistoga, California the castle is scheduled to open for tours and wine tasting in April of 2007.
