Wheal Coates was a Cornish tin mine. It operated from 1802 until 1889. The buildings, the remains of which you can see in this panorama, were used for winding, stamping and pumping. The mine workings reach down from the cliff top to below sea level and at high tide you can hear waves entering one of the old mine shafts.

At this time of the evening it's a pretty atmospheric place. You can see the last remnants of sunlight turning the sky over the Atlantic pale orange and you can also see the moon.

There's another, less obvious, atmospheric connection; research into renewable energy resources in response to the threat of global warming proposes using abandonded mine shafts like the one at Wheal Coates as a potential location for the production of energy from waves.
