Originally opened in 1840 by the London Cemetery Company as All Saints Cemetery, Nunhead Cemetery is one of the seven great commercial Victorian cemeteries established around the outskirts of London between 1832 and 1841 when the city's small parish churchyards became dangerously overcrowded.

The 52-acre cemetery is a tranquil wilderness, containing a variety of gravestones ranging from simple rounded headstones marking common or public burials, to larger more elaborate monuments erected in memory of the most eminent citizens of the day. The woodland in the cemetery grew up during a period of neglect in the 1960s and 70s and many gravestones have fallen or become broken and overgrown with time.

Part of the cemetery is now a nature reserve, supporting a diverse range of plants, trees and birds including several species of butterflies and bees. Today, the cemetery is maintained by the London Borough of Southwark and Friends of Nunhead Cemetery.
