Natural draft towers are typically about 400 ft (120 m) high, (this one is a bit smaller), depending on the differential pressure between the cold outside air and the hot humid air on the inside of the tower as the driving force. No fans are used. Beringen coal mine opened in 1907 and closed in 1989. It is now partly a museum.
You have a strange "borderlike" feeling when you are in the middle of the cooling tower, there is a "borderless" opening on the top and a very small entrance (manhole) on the side. Strange acoustics inside since the "borders" reflect all kinds of noise...
