Built more than 600 years ago, the wall has witnessed different times and rulers. And no doubt, long ago it used to provide the town citizens with extra security.
By the 16th century Tallinn had one of the most powerful defense systems in the whole of nothern Europe. In those days the town wall was about 4 km long with 46 defense towers. It was 16 m high and 3 m thick.
Today there is around 2 km of the old wall left and 26 towers are still there to witness the growth of the modern city around the old one.
