The Farm Market in St Mary's County, Maryland is in the community of Charlotte Hall. It is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The produce shed here has local vegetables and fruit, homemade cheeses, breads, cookies and cakes. The market covers several acres where merchants sell furniture and household items while chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, rabbits and horses can be bought as well. It's always enjoyable and interesting to browse the stalls for whatever can be found. There is always something new. The ring of roosters crowing and children laughing always fills the air.
Farmers' markets are probably the oldest of all markets. Unstructured, free-wheeling and typicaly outside, these gatherings are places where people barter and sell products from their farming operations, kitchens and worksheds. An occasion to visit, socialize and catch-up on news, weekend markets are events where the exchange of merchandise, information, ideas and promises reward the efforts of the work week for rural people. These are true freemarket systems. They need no interpretation, only to be enjoyed. Can you believe the price on those strawberries?
