A type of marketplace often overlooked, the ubiqitous gas (petrol) stations found the world over tie us to fossil fuels and environmental pollution. A typical one is shown here on a rare sunny day this spring in Southern California.
Next to this filling station is one of our favorite marketplaces: Sunland Produce. This unique establishment stocks numerous types of fresh produce and other foods not found in most American chain-brand grocery stores, thanks to the local ethnic markets it serves. From cactus to jicama to plantain to pomegranites and raw cane sugar, one can find a large range of new things to try.
