This elegantly curved street, built in 1880, was the first shopping street in Britain to be lit by electric light. Shoppers were protected on the pavement by iron and glass canopies which ran the entire length of the street.

The iron and glass canopies were removed in the early 1970s after years of neglect. Today, Electric Avenue contains a variety of shops selling a range of products from clothes, books, electrical goods and fabrics to meat, fruit and vegetables. Many shops specialise in Afro Caribbean food.

Electric Avenue is now part of Brixton's thriving street market which extends around the surrounding streets. Some old and more recent photos of Electric Avenue can be found here.
