The temple was founded in 780 and honors the popular 11-faced Kannon (goddess of mercy). It has been partially destroyed by fire several times over the centuries. Most of the present buildings generally date from a reconstruction completed in 1633. Kiyomizu-dera received World Cultural Heritage Listing by UNESCO in December 1994.
