Dead Centre of the City of Culture

For the whole of 2013 Derry has been given the title "UK City of Culture". This archaeological dig in the centre of the city is one of a series that have been sponsored as part of the year of cultural events.

The dig is a project supported by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Derry City Council Heritage and Museum Service and the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork, Queens University.

The excavation aims to uncover evidence of Derry's development as far back as the medieval period and beyond.

In the course of the dig the archaeologists have made many small finds, including: lead shot, coins dating back to 1601, clay pipes, bone dice, lots of 14th and 15th century pottery and some bronze age artefacts.

They have also made some major finds including at least thirteen sets of, mostly intact skeletal human remains dating from around 1600.

It is still early in the process of interpreting all these finds. The archaeologists have a described their progress in their daily blog. It has certainly achieved its promise of being a cultural attraction for visitors and residents.

The source images were taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mk II, Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens.

The camera was mounted on a Kaiden Kiwi panorama adapter on a Manfrotto 190XDB tripod.

Horizontal photographs were taken at 60° angles and also two ground shots and a sky shot. Each "shot" consisted of three bracketed exposures from +2 to -2 stops.

A total of 27 separate images were combined using Hugin in order to achieve this High Dynamic Range type result. Hugin in turn invokes Nona/Enfuse/Enblend in order to achieve this High Dynamic Range type result.
