The culture is very fragile, very sensitive and very threatened. It there a culture of War? The Destroyed Village of Douaumont reminds us how “everything” is mortal. Douaumont is the highest spot on the Cotes de Meuse within the Verdun area, at the elevation of 376 m. The name of the village was derived from 'Divine Mountain'. Until the beginning of 1916 the village was home for over 300 villagers. In the begining the WWI, the village became the scene of bitter fighting between the German and France Army and the village was completely destroyed. Today, along the road that leads through the site of the former village, and also on the other main street of the village, the sites of the houses have been marked by wooden markers. The marker posts at the sides of the roads showing where the houses stood also give the names of the families which lived here.
