The "Hotzenwald" is the southernmost part of the Black Forest and is supposed to be the remotest and darkest part of it. There are many places full of ancient myths and fairytales. Such a place is "Teufelsküche" — the Devils´s Kitchen. This place is an approximately 100m-long gorge in the valley of the stream "Alb" which runs crammed between granite boulders. There are several swirl holes in the bed of the stream.

During summertime the Teufelsküche is a place for taking a refreshing bath or having a barbecue.

One of the tales of Teufelsküche is a typical “builder and the devil” story:

Once upon a time the people of the valley of the Alb between Görwihler Stieg and Niedermühlen wanted to build a bridge over the valley — right over the Teufelsküche. When the bridge was just about to be finished no one dared to put the keystone in its place. In his anger the master builder uttered wild curses and all of a sudden the Devil himself was standing right behind him. He offered a deal: “I will place that keystone for you but the first soul crossing that bridge shall be mine.” The master builder agreed to this and the Devil thus placed the keystone. But to play a trick on him the master builder sent a cock over the bridge. Furiously the Devil stamped on the bridge and it broke up into many bits and pieces which, up to the present day, you can see lying around inside the gorge.
