High Point State Park in New Jersey features a monument, swimming lake, boating, camping, and hiking. Some paths lead to the Appalachian Trail. This is campsite 7 on Sawmill Lake. My family stayed two nights in tents at campsite 8.
The forest is thick, old, and tall. It has oak, maple, and hickory trees. It is continuous with the Stokes State Forest to the south, which grows on the Kittatinny Mountains, part of the Appalachians.
It is bear country. Visitors to the park are instructed to keep all food in a cooler or bear-proof container in the car. We took food out to eat on the picnic table which had a sign cautioning not to leave food scraps to attract bears. We each wore small bear bells so that bears would know we were coming. Bears avoid people but if surprised, might become aggressive.
There were few other people in the camping area compared to the large crowds at the swimming lake and monument. From the base (or top if you climb up inside the obelisk) the view is of three states: New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Aside from a few rivers and towns, the vista is mostly forest as far as the eye can see.
