Last Generation Protest

This is the Christmas tree set up by Gucci in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan: as you can see, there are orange stains on some elements of the tree. These were caused by activists from the environmentalist movement Ultima Generazione, who claim it is a protest against 'a symbol of a completely unsustainable lifestyle'... In Italy, after some protests involving defacing monuments and other objects of cultural heritage (such as paintings inside museums), a law has been enacted to increase penalties for those engaging in these types of actions. Personally, I fully understand the motivations of the young people; however, the method used may have caused dissent in the population. As always, for any valid protest or 'revolution,' the support of public opinion is crucial. If that is lacking, there is a risk of overshadowing the valid reason for the protest. Perhaps a form of protest that reconciles both needs should be found: attracting attention without causing harm, to regain the consensus of everyone on an issue fundamental to all of us.
