It was built by Behruz Ağa, the chief chamberlain of Suleiman the Magnificent, in 1562 together with the primary school fountain and its bath, which has not survived to the present day. The mosque, which is the work of Mimar Sinan, burned down in 1782, and was repaired in 1836 by Mahmud II. It took its final shape in 1983 after extensive renovation work.
