Chambers Cove, NL - You are viewing the site where the USS Truxtun and USS Pollux ran aground on the jagged cliffs of the island of Newfoundland in February 1942. My wife and I have visited this beautiful, rugged area on other occasions, but never in February or on a stormy day. This an HDR Panorama of the coast, overlooking the cove. Two small islets are situated in the centre of the cove, and it was between these islets that the Truxtun first struck and was torn apart by the vicious waves. Lawn Point, seen far right on the horizon, was where the Pollux struck. 204 lives were lost in total! The 187 men who survived the sinking of the two ships owed their lives to the heroic rescue operations carried out by the entire population of the mining town of St. Lawrence and to the people of Lawn.
