The Hubbell Trading Post was established in Ganado, Arizona, USA in 1878 by Juan Lorenzo Hubbell and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960. It is the oldest continuously operating trading post in the American southwest and remains a place to buy top quality Navajo rugs and jewelry. Artists touring and painting in the southwest area of the United States were often guests of the Hubbells at their home and bartered for their room and board with paintings. The Hubbell children made space on the walls for their newly acquired art by removing the Navajo baskets already attached to the walls and nailing them to the ceiling.
