One day in August I chose the first possible train connection between Munich and Ehrwald to reach Daniel. With a height of 2,340 m (7,677 ft) above sea level it is the highest mountain in the Ammergau Alps and offers a very nice balcony view towards the neighbouring Wetterstein mountains with a direct vista of the enormous Zugspitze massif about 7 km / 4.5 miles away. Zugspitze itself is Germany's highest mountain with a height of 2,962 m (9,718 ft) above sea level.

I really was aware of the special circumstances for this hiking tour: it is not that clever to climb such a peak on one of the hottest days of the year. The trail is known to offer almost no shadows in the higher regions. So I needed to bring more water than usual which added to the weight of my photo equipment.

On the other hand this scenario implied that the number of people running up that hill should be moderate. Some mountains in the vicinity of Munich tend to be overcrowded these days...

It was an exhausting tour and when arriving back down in the valley at the train station of Lermoos the train just left before my eyes and so I had another hour to spend. Luckily there is a small but lovely water park just a few minutes away which not only offers the best kind of refreshment after such a hot day but also a great view at the same Zugspitz massif I had seen just a couple of hours earlier from a viewpoint about 1,300 meters (4,250 ft) higher.
