Angel weather-vane on the spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral. Both the cathedral and the fortress were originally built under Peter the Great and designed by Domenico Trezzini. The cathedral's bell tower is the world's tallest Orthodox bell tower.
By 1717, Trezzini had completed the basic structure of the tower. By 1723 the spire, gilded and topped with an angel holding a cross, reached a height of 367 feet.
