Akabira city is located near the center of Hokkaido. The current population is about 10,000, but in mid 1950s it had around 60,000 lived that flourished with coal mines. The symbolic landmark of the city is "Vertical Shaft" of the former Simitomo Akabira Coal Mine.(1963-1994)

旧住友赤平炭鉱
北海道の中央部に近い赤平市。現在の人口は約1万人ほどであるが、炭鉱で栄えた昭和20年代後半には6万人ほどが暮らしていた。その街のシンボル的存在が旧住友赤平炭鉱（1963〜1994）の立坑やぐらである。
