This cathedral was constructed where once there was a Mosque. The current structures were conceived at the XVIth century after three serious earthquakes completely destroyed the previous temples, and built as a fortress-cathedral in order to protect it against pirate attacks, quite frequent at the time. The project was not completed until the XVIIIth century, when this cloister was erected.
