Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. It is the most visited national park in the US, with hiking, sightseeing and fishing its most popular activities. Numerous rivers and streams crisscross its mountain peaks and valleys.

In late November 2016, a series of wild fires burned 10,000 acres in the park. In the neighboring towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, 14,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate, and over 2000 buildings were damaged or destroyed.
