The Belchen, 1414m high, is one of the highest hills of the black forest. Only the Feldberg (visible just behind the cross) and two of it's nearer neighbors are higher, but the Belchen is certainly the most prominent hill in the Black Forest.

It is unusual that there is no snow in December. We came there, because in winter there is a good chance to have a magnificent view of the alps which are - at good conditions - visible between 120 and 280 kilometers south, especially around sunset. This time they where not sunlit and partly obscured by clouds but it was a beautiful sunset anyway.

In February 2002 I was there with my elder son (then 1 year old and in a baby carriage) and had a far better view: http://www.erik-krause.de/bilder/alpen/alpen.htm
