The museum on Hope Street in Bristol RI, commemorating the works of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, is a place of pilgrimage for sailors from all over the world. Almost every sailboat designed by Cap'n Nat Herreshoff, from little day sailers to mighty J-class America's Cup defenders, became an instant classic, and the "Wizard of Bristol", who died in 1938, is still perhaps the best known American yacht designer.The small yacht from whose deck I took this photo had a most unusual stayless cat-yawl rig, but no doubt sailed sweetly. In the light of current America's Cup practice, I would particularly like to call attention to the world's first racing catamaran, hanging directly in front of her. Cap'n Nat built it around 1876, won every race it was allowed to enter that season, then retired it because he didn't consider it a real sailboat.
