'Akelarre' is the Basque word for Sabbath.

Zugarramurdi is an important spot in the history of witchcraft in Spain. In 1610 40 villagers were taken to Logroño and judged by the Inquisition for worshipping Satan in the small upper caves near a meadow where a black male goat -the devil himself- used to browse. Twelve people where sentenced to death on the stake (although five of them had already died in prison).

The scandal that subsequently took place proved to be beneficial: accusations were miscredited, and as a result there were no more witches and wizards condemned anymore. But in the rest of Europe many of them were still being burnt more than one century later.
