In 1883 Antonio Gaudí was commissioned to continue the construction of a church that was started in 1882. After his death in 1926 the construction was continued according to Gaudí's ideas under various architects. Progress was very slow due to political reasons and financial dependency on private donations.

When I had a chance to visit the construction site in 1997 it made the impression of a ruin and I had strong doubts it would ever take the shape of a basilica. It was with great astonishment I saw the progress at a visit this year.

The main nave is finished and was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI during a visit in 2010. It is a truly impressive room in a unique style and with a very special atmosphere. Construction is continued and costs are now covered by tourist tickets and donations.
