It is a souvenir from a trip to the Catalonia coast: that Sunday was cold but the Sun was warming a little the South of France while the rest of the country and most of Europe was under a thick blanket of snow!
The windmill of Collioure was built in the Middle Ages when Jacques Ermengald bought the right to grind corn, wheat and any other cereals. This right was granted on February 11th, 1337, by the Knight Raymond de Toulouse on behalf of the King of Majorca. Built with stones from the nearby mountains, it's surrounded by olive trees that grow on the hill from where one can contemplate the village, the harbor and the beaches around the bay.
Grinding by means of the mill was discontinued in the 19th Century and the building fell slowly into ruins. The municipality of Collioure has bought the place and released funds for the refurbishment of the tower as well as the making of a new millstone. The windmill was reborn in 2001 when a roof and a wholly new wooden mechanism was installed by a team of skilled carpenters led by Bernard Garibal.
It is now in working order and it can grind olives to make the world famous olive oil from Collioure.

Une pancarte est accrochée à côté de la porte d'entrée où l'on peut lire:
<< Le 11 février 1337, le Chevalier Raymond de Toulouse, procureur du Roi de Majorque, cède à Jacques Ermengald de Collioure la directe d'une pièce de terre sise à Collioure, au lieu-dit "Cortines" et lui cède à cens le droit d'exploiter le moulin à vent qui y sera construit pour y moudre les grains ou récoltes de toute sorte de sa propre autorité.
Le moulin cessera son activité au XIXe siècle pour se trouver progressivement en état de ruine. Devenu propriété de la ville, la commune a entrepris sa restauration qui s'est achevée en juin 2001, avec la machinerie en bois réalisée de manière traditionnelle par les compagnons menuisiers de Bernard Gariblad.
Il est aujourd'hui en état de fonctionnement pour la trituration des olives et l'élaboration de l'huile de Collioure. >>
