Caption
As old US Route 66 works its way across the Mojave Desert in California, it passes by the lava flow from the Amboy cinder cone west of the town of Amboy.

At this spot, Route 66 follows the roadbed of its predecessor the National Old Trails Highway, which itself was built along the path of the preceding railroad line. Route 66 was in turn superseded by the modern Interstate Highways which took a slightly different path approximately 15 miles to the North.
