The uniqueness of the cemetery on a European scale are unique colored, wooden tombstones, on which are carved scenes from the life of the villagers buried there, often accompanied by witty poems that speak of the dead or why, because of which, they parted with their lives.
The cemetery began to take its current appearance in 1935, when local artist Ioan Patras first performed a cheerful epitaph. Currently, with more than 800 tombstones, Merry Cemetery is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Romania.
