Buchan Ness Lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson (grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson) and constructed by John Gibb & Sons of Aberdeen.

The granite tower is 35 metres high and the 2-million-candlepower light has a nominal range of 28 nautical miles. The light was first exhibited in 1827, changed to dioptric in 1910 and converted to electric operation in 1978. Today, the light is remotely monitored by the Northern Lighthouse Board in Edinburgh.
