Caption

From Sidelhorn, near Grimsel Pass in Switzerland, you have a magnificent view into the Uri, Bern and Valais alps. Finsteraarhorn and Lauteraarhorn are the dominant mountains in the west and far in the mist (south-west) even the Matterhorn is visible. On the other side you can see Furka pass and Rhone glacier under snow-topped Galenstock.

There is a far higher resolution version (gigapixel actually) available here.

Behind the scene : how this panorama was made

As one of the highlights of our summer holiday, my family and I climbed the Sidelhorn near Grimsel pass in Switzerland this summer. It was the first real summit for my children, and they had much fun searching for quartz crystals during the ascent. I had just my usual camera rucksack with me - no pano head, no tripod.

From the summit there was a magnificent view all around, with two of the most impressive mountains over 4000m in the Bernese range (Finsteraarhorn and Lauteraarhorn), the Matterhorn far in the dust and the Furka Pass, Uri granite mountains and the Rhone glacier in the east. And a view down in the upper Rhone valley (called Goms), to the Aare glaciers and lakes.

So I took panoramas at several focal lengths from different viewpoints around the summit in order to avoid having the mandatory cross in the image and to view down in all adjacent valleys. The idea to assemble all these images into one gigapixel panorama occurred much later...
