These are the renowned Two Towers (Due Torri) of Bologna, a local landmark. The higher one is called Torre Asinelli (by the family that built it) it was finished in 1119 and is 97 meters high. You can also go inside (498 stairs to the top) and get a splendid view of Bologna and the region, all the way to the sea. the smaller tower is called Garisenda and is 48 meters high. In front is the statue of San Petronio from the 1670s.
They were built here in order to guard the point where the city center meets Via Emilia, a Roman road finished in 187 BC. Now, almost 1,000 years later, they still overlook the city and its surroundings, but also serve as a students' and tourists' meeting point.
