What was my best panorama in the past year? Every year that's a difficult question that I have to answer for the "Best Of" event at the WWP at the end of the year. This year I started with pole shooting, so one of my pole shots should become the entry for the "Best Of" event. What I like most with pole shots is the unique perspective, especially if there are lots of people and you use the pole to get your equipment above these people. So I have chosen the Ironman Germany competition in Frankfurt this year. I shot about a dozen panoramas at this event but what I like most are the crowds on the Römerberg shortly after the first female participant (Chrissie Wellington) reached the finish in 8:51:24.7.

Making Of

The shooting was done with a 3.15 meter (appx. 10.33 ft) pole to reach a more elevated viewpoint above the people. The pole was extended to its full length. The lens was mounted with a custom made bracket, which allows to mount the lens to turn around the no-parallax point of the lens.

As the lens is a fisheye lens, four pictures easily cover 360°. To be sure I took three exposures at each direction. The exposures were 0.7 f-stops apart. The best exposed set was chosen before stitching.

Nadir and zenith were retouched manually.
