The Elswout estate dates from the 17th century. Initially, the estate was laid out in a formal, French style. In the course of the 18th century this was changed into a romantic, English landscape style.
The mansion and estate have a rich history. People like Napoleon and the Empress Sissy from Austria stayed there once as guests.
The first owners made their money by selling sand from their property to the cities of Haarlem and Amsterdam. This digging resulted in large height differences in the terrain, and in a number of ponds and lakes.
The panorama shows a.o. the beautiful Orangery, and through the branches the large mansion can be seen in the distance.
