The panorama shows Skaftafellsjökull, an outlet glacier from Vatnajökull ice cap, the largest in Europe (8.400 km2), in South-East Iceland. Since the end of the Little Ice Age in the late 19th century the Skaftafellsjökull front has retreated about 2 km. With accelerated speed during the last years due to increased Global Warming. Skaftafellsjökull is a part of the Skaftafell National Park, the second largest in Iceland (4.807 km2). In the Middle Ages the area was abandoned after two major eruptions in Öræfajökull, the second largest volcano in Europe, dominating the skyline above the Skaftafellsjökull glacier.
