Wawau is the name of a small cape. The name has early Polynesian origins and is found across the South Pacific.

The geology is composed of red oxidized volcanic soil, lithified beachrock and basalt boulders from the Kula Volcanics over 150,000 years ago.

In 1738, on the nearby fields of Papanene and the current community of Sprekelsville, two rival brothers led armies of over 10,000 warriors from the islands of Hawai'i, O'ahu and Maui in a final battle for control of Maui. A truce was called after days of fighting with many casualties on both sides.

The fallen were buried in nearby sand dunes, now part of a local golf course. The adjoining area, currently called Baldwin Beach, was once nicknamed "skull beach."
