Aspen was originally a mining town, founded in 1880 after the discovery of one of the richest silver lodes the world has ever known.

The Aspen/Snowmass resort comprises four separate ski areas, located near the town of Aspen. These ski areas are Aspen, Aspen Highlands Bowl, Buttermilk, and Snowmass.

The Aspen Highlands ski area is a long ridgeline rising from the valley floor, and is famous around the world for the steep alpine bowl above the ski area.

Aspen Highlands Bowl is a hike-accessed section of the Aspen Highlands ski area, above the lift-accessed terrain. This photo is taken from the ridgeline between the lift-accessed ski area and the start of the uphill hike to Highland Peak.

Highland Peak, above Highland Bowl, reaches an altitude of 12392 feet above sea level. At this altitude, the effects of altitude sickness can be a problem to some people, often being uncomfortable, easily becoming deadly.

The views from Highland Peak are spectacular, with a stunning vista taking in the 14,000+ foot peaks of Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak, Capitol Peak, and Snowmass Mountain.

The Aspen Highlands Bowl is a high avalanche danger area, with ski patrollers and volunteers having to 'boot pack' the snow in the early season, by tying themselves to the top of the bowl with ropes, and walking up and down the face of the bowl, packing the snow down with their feet, so that it is less prone to avalanches later in the snow season.
