Filmmaker, painter and renowned musicologist, Harry Smith (1923-1991) developed an extemporaneous, improvisatory, spontaneous, multiprojection technique, using magic lanterns, "animating surrounds," light cannons, colored gels and multiple projection units for screening his animated films. He used peripheral film frames to break down the edge of the movie, extending it outward, and moving superimpositions to disrupt the image, as an attempt to reach the subconscious.M. Henry Jones, has staged a number of Harry Smith Re-Creations both indoors and out, in venues ranging from the Roman Forum to this event, in collaboration with Angel Orensanz, at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, on Norfolk Street, in Manhattan. The event was curated by Clayton Patterson.
It was pouring rain outside, and twenty degrees colder than it had been during the day; the crowd was thin. I arrived after the event had begun and realized that this was a moment that begged to be shot as an immersive -- tripod-less or not. Harry was quite a collagist. So, in the spirit of Harry Smith, here it is.
