Appledore Island

Appledore Island hosts the Shoals Marine Laboratory, which is operated jointly by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. This panorama takes in the view from the top of the World War II-era, seven-story Coast Guard Tower and encompases almost all of the lab's research and teaching facilities, administration buildings, living quarters, dining hall, and a few private residences.

Having assisted with underwater archaeology courses on Appledore, and having proposed to my wife while she served as a whale researcher there, and having visiting on various other occasions, I knew it would be rather suitable for a virtual tour, of which this panorama is one node.

In late August I shot nearly 100 panoramas over two days. These will be used to promote the lab on its forthcoming redesigned web site and high-resolution, full-screen versions will be sold on disc by the lab store as one way of generating scholorship money for students studying there.

Not generally accessible, one reaches the top of the Coast Guard Tower by climbing up ladders and emerging through a small hatch (the white wooden box). A lack of meaningful guard rails means a cautious approach to climbing out and setting up equipment to shoot a panorama. It's a little intimidating at first because there's not much room up there but the view sets the mind at ease as long as the wind's not too bad.
