Some students choose Exeter College simply because of its choir. Certainly it is one of the best mixed choirs in the University. Since the addition of women (it was once made up of men and boys), it has gone from strength to strength.
The choir sings three Evensong services each week in the Chapel. Its repertoire stretches from the likes of Gibbons and Weelkes to Parry and Tippett. The superb acoustics of the Chapel make singing both enjoyable and very rewarding. In turn this has led to the use of the Chapel for some successful concerts, including a recent performance of Scarlatti's challenging Stabat Mater.
There are also frequent choir tours during in the vacations. Recently, these have included trips to New York and to Paris (where we sang in the prestigious setting of Notre Dame for Morning Mass on Palm Sunday, as well as the not-so-prestigious venue of Euro-Disney!), as well as various places closer to home (such as St.George's Chapel, Windsor, and York Minster). Sometimes we spend a few days in early summer singing in country parish churches.
