A chapel was found in this place already in 1063 and records from 1156 mention a real church. In 1573 the Dutch rebels, in their fight for independance from Spain, destroyed the church and the tower. They wanted to prevent that Spanish troops would occupy the church and use the tower during their seige of the liberated town of Leiden, just a few kilometers to the south.

Leiden survived the Spanish seige and the choir of the church was rebuilt in 1579 and used as a protestant church until 1873. Also in 1579, a windvane was erected on the remains of the tower. It had (and still has) the form of a man of war. The then Admiral of Holland, Jan van Duvenvoorde, was the master of Warmond's castle, "Huys te Warmont", and the windvane was in his honour. A full restauration of the tower was carried out in 1975.

The ruins of the church and the tower are now one of Warmond's most peaceful and idyllic places.
