MAM is part of the cultural history of Latin America. It was founded in 1948 as one of the continent's first modern art museums by the Italo-Brazilian entrepreneur Francisco Matarazzo. Its inauguration coincided with an important period for the institutionalization of Brazilian art that included the founding of the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ), the Vera Cruz cinema company, the Brazilian Comedy Theater (TBC) and the film library Cinemateca Brasileira.
