The Wrigley Building and the Chicago Tribune Tower in Chicago were important landmarks in starting the fascination with architectural illumination in American cities. While William Wrigley had the entire facade of his company's headquarters illuminated in 1921 in bright white light, the architect Raymond Hood and the lighting designer Basset Jones decided on color illumination limited to the top of the Chicago Tribune Tower across the street in 1927. Hood, who coined the term "architecture of the night" had the nocturnal illumination in mind when he designed the tower's imaginative Gothic setback summit.
