Eyes Wide Open, a project of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), was "An Exhibition on the Human Cost of the Iraq War."

In January 2005, Eyes Wide Open brought more than 1,570 pairs of military boots to Greensboro, North Carolina. Each pair of boots honors a U.S. military casualty. Quilts, banners and civilian shoes honored Iraqis killed in the conflict.

As U.S. casualties rose, more boots were added for each life lost.

The boots were organized by state. Some were tagged with just a name. Others were accompanied by photos, flowers, biographies, testimonials or notes from loved ones. More than 3,100 people came to see the exhibit during its brief stay in Greensboro.

The exhibit toured the nation before going on hiatus later in the year. More information on AFSC and Eyes Wide Open: http://afsc.org/eyes/default.htm
