Originally this natural bay was home to the Yurok village of Tsurai (Cher-Ae). Named "Trinidad" in 1775 by Spanish explorers, the bay and locale have since been subject to fur trade, a whaling port, a logging town and a quarry source.
The area currently hosts a bedroom and small fishing community as well as scenic tourism and the Cher-Ae Heights Casino. Also, Trinidad Head is the location of one of the few United States climate baseline observatories from which climate change is monitored.
The lighthouse in the panorama is a 1948 replica of the actual Trinidad Head lighthouse built in 1871 which is still in use at the Coast Guard station.
