Falls Park, Sioux Falls South Dakota.
When deciding to use this image it wasn’t that I felt it was the best that I have done, but rather the best place to be no matter what time of year it is. This place has been so important to me all throughout my life and will probably be for years to come.
Lately when visiting the falls I’ve been thinking that nearly every theme that was done by the WWP is present here at the Falls and that I could have shot the Falls for all of them.
Going back centuries, the native Lakota and Dakota would rendezvous here with French fur trappers, not only building a bridge between the two cultures but by trading, which was a form of marketplace. Present day during the summer months we have the farmers market near by and once a year we have a multicultural festival here at the Falls, where all the different cultures that live in the Sioux Falls area gather together and share with each other their cultures, their foods, their arts and their stories - another market to bridge the differences in cultures.
The water of the Falls has been a source of energy for centuries, from using the water to power the flour mill, to powering the energy plant for electricity. When you are near the Falls not only can you hear the roar of the water but you can feel the energy from the moving water, in the ground, in the rocks and in the air.
It is strangely very comforting to be next to the falls. At times when you are here you will see people just sitting, by themselves or with others, just watching the water. The people in the park will have a serene look on their face, comfortable and content, enjoying this sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world we live in.
This place is truly awesome, a wonderful place to spend time no matter what time of the year it is, and in my mind it is the best.
