October is internationally recognised as Breast Cancer Month (BCM). It is a time when corporations, community organisations and individuals around the world seek to emphasise the impact of breast cancer on our communities and help raise funds for research.
In 2000 Estee Lauder, as a way of drawing attention to October, initiated the Global Illumination where significant landmarks and monuments around the world are lit pink to welcome the start of Breast Cancer Month. In 2004, more than 30 cities participated in the Illumination including London, New York, Tokyo, Warsaw, Paris, Sydney and Amsterdam
(Pink Dam full screen).
This year the National Breast Cancer Foundation in partnership with Estee Lauder again participated in the Global Illumination as the launch of Breast Cancer Month. On Sunday the 2nd of October and the whole week long the Erasmusbrug in Rotterdam was lit pink to support the cause.
The pictures were taken on the middle of the bridge, between the two tram lines. Some of the drivers were not happy with me standing about 0,5 meter from the side. I also made a special version that is only to be seen as a
straight photograph.
