England Cricket Team wins The Ashes

England's cricketers were given a truely rapturous reception by thousands of Londoners and cricket fans in Trafalgar Square at the end of the Ashes Victory Parade through the streets of London in an open top London bus to celebrate their win over Australia.

The team later enjoyed a Downing Street reception with the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and then went to Lord's to hand over the Ashes urn for safe-keeping.

I was lucky enough to be in London at the time and was able to closely follow the open top bus right up till it reached Trafalgar Square, but I was unable to get any closer to the final stage than shown here due to the huge crowd that had gathered in the Square, which spilled out right across the main roads. What are The Ashes? The Ashes is the name given to a series of cricket matches between England and Australia which are played every two years. Whoever wins the series, 'wins The Ashes'.

The matches are held alternately in England and Australia. They consist of a series of five Test Matches, each lasting up to five days. This year, 2005, they were held in England, and the English team beat Australia in a series for the first time since 1987.
