Located south of Ballarat, the Central Highlands Bird of Prey Shelter is a private, licensed wildlife shelter which focuses on the special requirements of injured and orphaned birds of prey. Many birds are brought to the shelter following a variety of accidents including collisions with vehicles, electrical infrastructure and barbed wire fences. Spring months bring an influx of juvenile birds which may be orphaned or starving. On arrival, injured raptors are taken to a practicing veterinarian for assessment and treatment. Where possible, birds are released back into the wild after a period of recuperation at the shelter.
